BEGIN THE TRADITION

Some gifts are opened once. Others continue speaking.

There are words we mean to say—but ordinary life moves quickly.

The Sealed Letter Tradition gives parents, grandparents, godparents, spouses, and other loved ones a simple way to write those words before they are needed.

Each letter is written for a particular future moment:

  • When you need to remember you are loved
  • When you wonder who you are
  • When you are afraid
  • When you feel far from home
  • When I am no longer here

You choose the recipient, the occasion, and when each letter should be opened.

This is more than a collection of stationery. It is the beginning of a family practice: noticing what matters, putting love into words, and preserving those words for the years ahead.

A Guide You Can Return to Year After Year

The downloadable guide helps you begin without prescribing what your letters must say.

Inside, you will find:

  • Guidance for choosing a recipient
  • Suggestions for deciding when each letter should be opened
  • Reflective writing prompts
  • A Scripture-rooted framework
  • The Fruits of the Holy Spirit as a lens for noticing growth
  • Ideas for making letter-writing an annual family tradition
  • Guidance for preserving and entrusting completed letters

Because the guide is digital, you can keep it, return to it, and use it again whenever your family is ready to write another collection.

The first five letters begin the tradition. The guide helps it continue.

How the Tradition Works

1. Choose someone you love

Write to a child, grandchild, godchild, spouse, sibling, parent, or another person whose life you have been entrusted to witness.

2. Choose five meaningful moments

Decide when each letter should be opened. You may write for a future milestone, a difficult season, or a moment when your recipient may need to remember what is true.

3. Remember, discern, and write

Use the downloadable guide to remember what you have witnessed, discern what should be preserved, and put your love, faith, and blessing into words.

4. Seal and entrust

Place each letter in its envelope, mark when it should be opened, and keep the collection somewhere safe—or entrust it to its recipient with instructions for the future.

Letters for the Moments That Shape a Life

Your collection might include:

  • Open when you graduate
  • Open when you leave home
  • Open on your wedding day
  • Open when you become a parent
  • Open when you doubt yourself
  • Open when you need courage
  • Open when you feel far from God
  • Open when you need to remember where you come from
  • Open when you need to know how deeply you are loved
  • Open when I am no longer here

The occasion does not need to be dramatic. A letter can also preserve the ordinary beauty of a particular year: what changed, what was difficult, what made you laugh, and where you noticed God’s faithfulness.

Rooted in Faith. Made for Ordinary Family Life.

The Sealed Letter Tradition does not replace the Church’s ancient prayers, sacramental life, or the devotional practices families already hold dear.

It helps families carry prayer into the quotidian: the birthdays, hospital stays, diagnoses, graduations, departures, uncertainties, and quiet evenings that make up a life.

The guide draws upon Scripture and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit to help writers notice and name what God may be forming in someone they love.

“We will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord.”
— Psalm 78:4
